I’m sure this list has been out for awhile, but I didn’t see it until yesterday. The Kid eats at least half the things on there. Daily.
We’ve been toying with gardening for a long while now (been growing cucumbers and raspberries for two years), but after reading that post I decided to go all out. We’ll be growing corn, carrots, cucumbers, broccoli, strawberries, raspberries, peppers, and a few other various things: all organic, including the potting/garden soil.
This is the set-up I ordered for the frame of the garden (or you can build your own), and I ordered organic seeds from Johnny’s and Natural Gardening Company (one of the only places I was able to find strawberry seedlings right now). Everything should be here by Monday at the latest, so we can get started.
I don’t expect to be able to grow everything this year, especially the strawberries, just because it’s so late in the season already. But I did order a book (and talked to a gardener) about growing crops in winter, so hopefully I’ll be able to slowly get out of buying produce from the stores, organic or not.
Some good crops to grow in winter? Garlic, broccoli, celery, carrots, and cauliflower. I just need to remember to plan early. The coolest part? I’m not actually using a lot of LAND to do this – most of my garden (except the corn and carrots, which need space, depth, and fencing) are in pots. It’s easier to keep the soil moist, and if the weather turns sour you can rescue the plants easier. Until I can build my greenhouse, that is.
I haven’t figured out which kind I’m going to build yet, but there are tons of ideas out there. I like this one, but I probably don’t have that kind of space, so I’m much more likely to go for something like this.
The Kid loves helping with all this stuff, and it’s teaching him about both food and the environment.
Until everything’s sorted out and growing well we’ll continue shopping organic at EarthFare, Greenlife, and Publix.
